چکیده

Understanding the impacts of long-term agricultural practices on soil quality (SQ) is key for sustaining agroecosystem productivity. This study investigated conventional and no-tillage (NT), residue burning no burning, level (high low), irrigation (irrigated dryland) effects properties, SQ, crop yields following 16 yr a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] double-crop system via Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF). A field experiment was conducted in Lower Mississippi River Delta region silt-loam soil. Bulk density, organic C (SOC), total N (TN), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), P K from 0- to 10-cm depth were used as SQ indicators individually an overall index (SQI). Following yr, reduced SOC (1.1%) compared with (1.24%). Irrigation resulted greater TN than dryland management systems (p < 0.05). Reduced pH extractable occurred under NT, high residue, irrigated treatments. increased soybean yields, regardless tillage system. Burned, NT–high (3.45 Mg ha?1). because low EC scores. High treatment within NT systems, owing The SMAF indices identified irrigation, optimal fertilization SQ. Monitoring P, may be needed maintain wheat–soybean systems.

Detachment of Soil as Affected by Fertility Management and Crop Rotations

An experiment was initiated on Sharpsburg silty clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Argiudoll) in 1981 to compare the effects of fertility management and crop practices on splash detachment of soil. Experimental treatments included comparisons of crop rotations of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.| after corn (Zea mays L.) (SB), corn after soybean (C), and oat/red and yellow sweetclove...

Soil Management and Tillage

Soil is one of our most precious natural resources. Proper soil management is a key to sustainable agricultural production. Soil management involves six essential practices: proper amount and type of tillage, maintenance of soil organic matter, maintenance of a proper nutrient supply for plants, avoidance of soil contamination, maintenance of the correct soil acidity, and control of soil loss (...

Carbon Dioxide Emissions as Affected by Alternative Long-Term Irrigation and Tillage Management Practices in the Lower Mississippi River Valley

Ensuring the sustainability of cultivated soils is an ever-increasing priority for producers in the Lower Mississippi River Valley (LMRV). As groundwater sources become depleted and environmental regulations become more strict, producers will look to alternative management practices that will ensure the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of their production systems. This study was conducted ...

Soil Carbon Dioxide Emission as Influenced by Irrigation, Tillage, Cropping System, and Nitrogen Fertilization

Soil and crop management practices can influence CO2 emission from crop and grasslands and therefore on global warming. We examined the effects of two irrigation systems (irrigated vs. non-irrigated) and six management practices [no-till malt barley (Hordeum vulgaris L.) with 67 or 134 kg N ha (NTBFN), notill malt-barley with 0 kg N ha (NTBON), conventional-till malt barley with 67 or 134 kg N ...
